Written by CUFF Editorial Team
Growing up as a military brat, Leslie Black’s life was anything but ordinary. Born in the Philippines and raised across Japan, Louisiana, and South Carolina, her diverse upbringing laid the foundation for her trailblazing acting career.
“My life was pretty interesting growing up,” Black reflects. “I’m a military brat. I was born in the Philippines and grew up in Japan, Louisiana and South Carolina.” It was in South Carolina that Black’s big break came when the owner of a local store, who happened to be a theater major, cast her in the lead role of his television show. “It went #1 in the region after he placed it on CW,” she proudly shares.
Despite facing early skepticism about her aspirations, Black refused to be deterred. “I faced some criticism early on when I told people that I wanted to be an actress. I was constantly told that I wouldn’t go far, but I really believed in myself and didn’t give up.” Determined to pursue her passion, Black made the bold move to Atlanta, where she began to see a significant shift in her career trajectory.
One of the key challenges Black encountered was the lack of acting opportunities in her hometown of South Carolina. “There was a lack of acting roles in the area and I found myself having to move to Atlanta to really start seeing a change and get considered for roles.” However, her unwavering determination and self-belief propelled her forward.
Black’s unwavering commitment to authenticity has been the driving force behind her success. “I embrace my identity by allowing myself to authentically live through each role that I take on,” she explains. This ethos was on full display in her audition for the hit series “Fight Night,” where she transformed into a 70s-inspired powerhouse, complete with an afro wig and fur.
Her breakout role as the fierce motorcycle-riding Sedi in “Montross Blood Rules” on TV One was a game-changer, allowing audiences to see her in a whole new light. “It really allowed people to see me in a different light,” Black says. “I’ve had several roles early on in my career, but once I booked the role of Sedi, I saw a significant change in my trajectory.”
“I think that we are seeing more plus-size women in film and television roles then ever before. That is the one thing I definitely noticed has changed over my career.”
“Stand in your truth and go for it. There are a significant amount of stories being told that have a need for minority women.”
Maintaining a positive self-image and sense of self-worth in the industry is crucial for Black. “I’m 100% in control of my brand. I know exactly who I am and I present myself authentically with everything I do. I also like to make sure any of the marketing material I present is polished and up to my standards as I also want to be seen as professional in the realm of acting.”
With her sights set on the future, Black’s ambitions are nothing short of extraordinary. “I’m hoping to find myself as a lead of several films. I’m also hoping to land a series regular role in a high profile show.” Her dream role? Portraying the legendary Jill Scott in a biopic.
As she continues to blaze a trail, Black remains grounded in her principles. “My goal is to continue to train. I want to continue to be a force to be reckoned with so my intent is to stay sharp. I also want to produce and star in my own projects 5-10 years from now. I’ve produced two short films thus far and I plan to continue to do more.”
When it comes to the industry’s ability to better offer opportunities representing diversity, Black is optimistic. “I think if the industry allows us to continue to tell our stories we will be fine. We have so many untold stories and if Hollywood continues to let us in to do so we will be just fine.”
With her unwavering dedication and unapologetic spirit, there’s no doubt that Leslie Black is poised to leave an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. As she continues to shatter barriers and redefine beauty standards, her inspiring journey serves as a beacon for aspiring actors and actresses alike.
